Waterton Lakes National Park is a not to be missed stop for adventurous travellers. From breathtaking vistas you can access a short distance from the village, to multi-day backcountry hiking trips, Waterton delivers memorable experiences for all levels of explorers. A vast network of hiking trails, fresh glacial lakes and amazing night skies provide the backdrop for an adventurous visit.
Waterton is a small but special National Park located about 2.5 hours south of Calgary, Alberta, and sits right in the corner of the province on the border to British Columbia and the border to the USA. It has many impressive designations; International Peace Park, Biosphere Reserve, and UNESCO World Heritage Site, just to name a few! The majority of businesses are locally and family owned, and gives Waterton its fun, relaxing vibe that makes it a favourite destination of hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts.
Even though the Park is open year round, you will find that most of the best hiking and outdoor adventuring is done in the spring to fall season. The majority of businesses are seasonal and are open from May to September. If you are planning on the best weather for hiking and other outside pursuits, June – September is the best time to visit. The elements can be unpredictable, especially in the “shoulder seasons” of June and September, so make sure you check the weather and always come prepared with the right gear!
-DAY 1-
Once you arrive and get settled, grab your cowboy hat and head to Alpine Stables. Hop on horseback to explore Waterton on a western adventure! This local family business has been taking people on horseback tours around the Park for over 50 years and will share stories and knowledge of beautiful flowers and wildlife. Take in the views as you explore wooded trails, lakeshore paths and mountain climbs. They offer experiences for all levels of rider and every adventure level.

Make sure to rest after your daytime explorations and get ready to set out into the evening as you join Dark Sky Guides for a tour of Waterton’s night sky. Discover the universe while these local storytellers deliver memorable and interpretive tours of stargazing and celestial exploration. Waterton is an International Dark Sky Preserve, so get out and explore the dark skies while you are here!

-DAY 2-
Make sure to get a good breakfast to fuel your day ahead. Hire a Guide from Tamarack Adventures and hit the trail to experience the higher altitudes of the Park. The Tamarack family has been guiding people around Waterton since 1922 and provide local and professional knowledge of the area and the diverse ecosystems along the trails. Rowe Lakes and Carthew-Alderson are two favourite day hikes that showcase Waterton’s unique topography. If you are visiting in June or early July, you will get to see the beautiful blooms of the many Wildflower species that grow here.

-DAY 3-
Get up early and see the sunrise from the top of the Bear’s Hump. This short but steep hike delivers the ultimate view of the Waterton Valley and the early morning departure ensures you will miss the crowds. The trailhead is located across the road from the entrance to the Prince of Wales hotel, just a few minutes walk from the village. Don’t forget your camera!
Afterwards, head up to Cameron Lake, driving the 14km Akamina Parkway as it winds up the valley towards a beautiful alpine lake. Rent a watercraft of your choice from Cameron Lake Boat Rentals (canoe, paddleboard, kayak, or rowboat) and set off into the cool, glacial waters with a spectacular mountain backdrop. Fun fact: the mountain at the south end of the lake is actually located in the USA! Don’t worry, you won’t need a passport if you paddle over to the shore.

-IF YOU HAVE MORE TIME-
Waterton hosts one of the most beautiful Golf Courses in the area, the Waterton Lakes Golf Course. This Stanley Thompson designed course plays through the valley and is often a common place for wildlife sightings. This course is challenging and fun, and the biggest hazard for any game played here is not getting distracted by the scenery.

Camping is a popular accommodation for many hikers and visitors. The Townsite Campground is located directly in the Village and close to all businesses and services. You can book it online through Parks Canada’s reservation system. Belly River Campground is located outside of the village, about 20 min along the Chief Mountain Highway. It is a more rustic camping experience and is self-service for payment. You can see current rates and restrictions on camper sizes on Parks Canada’s website.
You will also find a variety of hotel stays in Waterton, from rustic BnB’s to historic hotels. Bear Mountain Motel is a classic retro motel with modest and comfortable rooms.
