Don’t be fooled by the short distance of this hike, the climb is steep, but the beautiful lake that is your destination is well worth it. Follow the trail past Bertha Point (stop for a photo!) and continue on towards Lower Bertha Falls. After some water and a snack break, walk across the bridge and start the trek up towards the lake. This short but steep climb takes you through the sub-alpine forest, and as you climb up the 21 switchbacks (don’t worry some are short!) you’ll be greeted with the contrast of the old growth forest and the recent burn from the Kenow Fire. Regrowth of forest floor vegetation and wildflowers show off nature’s resilience. Wide-open views of the Waterton valley make each east-facing switchback a worthy place to take a break. See the cascading water of Upper Bertha Falls run down the valley wall and get a close up look at ancient rock and pre-Cambrian geology as you make the final climb to the top. A short decent down a rocky path and Bertha Lake greets you. Follow the trail around the lake in either direction and pick a spot along the shore to bask in the glory of the brilliant green-blue lake and breathtaking valley. The short trip around the lake is well worth it and provides a quieter experience on busy days at this popular lake. Wildlife sighting at the south end of the lake are a welcome perk. Stay at the backcountry campsite overnight and enjoy the stars in solitude. Permits can be purchased at the Parks Canada Visitor Centre.
