Chief Mountain International Highway

Chief Mountain International Highway

Take an afternoon to drive this beautiful scenic parkway that connects Waterton with its sister National Park, Glacier, located in Montana USA. Follow the highway out of the townsite, past the Park Gate and follow the signs for the US Border Crossing. This 22 km drive takes you out of the Waterton valley and loops back into the eastern slopes of the Park. The drive starts with a steep climb up to the “Two Flags” pullout, where you can gaze out at where the mountains meet the prairies. Continue along and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, as red fox and bear sightings are common on this drive. Pass where the 1998 Sofa Mountain Fire burned and admire the regrowth of the lush meadows and forest that now surround it. Cross over the winding Belly River and see views of the sacred Chief Mountain dominate the landscape. As the road climbs higher, you pass the Belly River Campground, where you can sleep steps away from the flowing waters of the river. As the road plateaus, the International Border comes into view. If you plan on visiting Glacier National Park, then bring your passports and cross at this historic border crossing (Seasonal hours apply). If not, make sure to turn around on the Canadian side and take a picture at the beautiful sign commemorating the International Peace Park. Follow the road back the way you came to the Park Gate.

You can catch a daily shuttle that runs from Waterton to Chief Mountain Border crossing and back. This helps hikers who are doing overnight backpacking trips in Glacier as well as visitors to Waterton who do not have vehicles. Contact Waterton Outdoor Adventures for more details.
