This picturesque spot got its name from being the old location of the Hay Barns for the Parks Canada horses. Now it’s a recreation area and a well-loved fishing spot. Located on the straight in between middle and lower Waterton Lakes, this day use spot is accessed off the entrance road just past the turn to Red Rock Canyon. Turn right off the highway at the Hay Barn sign and slowly follow the dusty gravel road until you come to a clearing. Drive around the bend to the left and you will find picnic spots with basic amenities, where you can park and enjoy an afternoon with friends and family. Follow one of the beaten down paths through the grass and you will find yourself at water’s edge, with plenty of space to lay out a blanket and enjoy the day with the mountains as your backdrop. Bring your rod to do some fishing, as these waters are home to some elusive Brown trout as well as other species. Make sure you have a Waterton fishing license and know the regulations. Dip your toes in the water to cool off, and swim in the chilly water if you dare. Be cautious as the current can be strong early in the season. A day at the Hay Barn is a day well spent!
