Sofa Falls and Basin

A beautiful hike on the eastern slopes of the Park. Trailhead begins at the first pullout located just after passing Two Flags on the Chief Mountain Highway. Follow the trail into an aspen forest and a gentle climb breaks out and opens up onto a hilly slope. See breathtaking views of the prairie grassland and the mountain valley as they meet. Sofa Mountain gives a stunning backdrop as the trail continues up through the sub-alpine meadow. The site of the 1998 Sofa Mountain fire dominates the eastern views and gives a visual timeline of what a forest looks like a decade after a burn. A short climb brings you a gentle waterfall, flowing down from the basin that is nestled above. Sit and enjoy the views from here or climb a little higher up next to the falls and look out onto the majestic prairie. If possible, you can cross the water and continue 1 km up the trail to the basin. Beware of higher water in the early months. Find yourself in basin surrounded by the cliff walls of Sofa Mountain. Look out for marmots, as these animals are a common sight on this trail.
